* Big Chefs’in Krem Brulee milföyünü pek beğendik.
* Uçuşan bluzlar şu ara listemde yer alıyor. Sebepsiz.
* Seu Jorge and Almaz konserine gidip izlenimlerimi yazdım.
Saturday night…we were experiencing the lovely weather that covered us with its summer blanket while we were in the last month of autumn. Thanks to Garanti Caz Yeşili, I won a ticket to Seu Jorge and Almaz concert that night and the night started to fill in with Brazilian wind…:) Although I didn’t know lots of songs by him, it was OK with me as discovery mode is always a good one. So, once again, we were at Babylon to watch them performing live…
There Seu Jorge came to the stage with his coat and dark glasses…he was so cool throughout the concert…dance moves were unique…he has a laid-back voice, not very playful but he played with his electronic toys to add a variety which surprised me really…the only trouble was that he spoke in Portuguese in between and made it impossible to understand what stories he was telling…:) His group Almaz consists of the guitarist Lucio Maia, drummer Pupillo and the bassist Alexandre Dengue plus the percussionist Gustavo Dalva…:( They were so lovely…I liked Maia’s guitar tone and style…nice distorted dubby guitar can immediately flow into rock, latin, and soul waters…Dengue’s basslines were stable, fast and sometimes playful…Pupillo whose name reminds me of a football player, played the drums like a footballer. He was so rhythmic, careful and vivacious…unfortunately, I didn’t hear Gustavo Dalva well enough to make a comment…The group was so cute and sympathetic. I loved their vibe on stage….otherwise it would have been impossible to dance all night …:)
I was expecting samba songs from them, but what I experienced was the songs carrying the flavours of rock, funk, psychedelic and soul as well as samba. The band started the evening’s proceedings low as Jorge picks up a flute and the slow rattling groove and haunting melody of “Errare Humanum Est” (a Jorge Ben song). It was original with Seu’s laidback voice and Lucio’s spluttering guitar. Jorge has a unique choreography…shuffling his feet…shoulders as well…grooving around the stage. Among the other songs I remember Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You”. It was an energetic and rhythmic version. The interesting part was that the percussionist kept the time by tapping a soda bottle and we were singing “All night” parts out loud…”The Model” by Kraftwerk was so psychedelic with Jorge’s reverb-laden vocals and Maia’s haunting James Bond-style surfer-guitar licks. The song didn’t offer an extraordinary cover but was travelling in the minor mode and had the potential to fly you high :) “Cirander”…dub…60s-like…spaghetti Western…because of Maia…“Ziggy Stardust” by David Bowie was another suprise. “Juiza Final”…samba, soul, psychedelic…reverbed…“Mas Que Nada” is one of my favourite Brazilian songs and they played that, too. Especially, Maia showed off his solo skills culminating in a slowed down instrumental version of the song which was well received. After that, Jorge came on stage sang another song and tied it to Mas Que Nada in the end. I have seen better versions of it but since I love the song, it didn’t matter…And Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” was the best, where Jorge sings “bees and things and flowers” like a bassline…jubilant and mournful…it was the encore song sung again with the whole crowd…:)
Their experimental mood with considering the songs other than Brazilian ones is noteworthy. I believe they will take on a further step in the future. They float away from the traditional samba and get caught in a mixture of different rivers and they are on the verge of being one of the best. I loved the guitar…especially Maia was fantastic… I loved his every riff…and the bass was nice with its fluent speaking bass riffs…Pupillo with his stable rhythms keeping the group on the main path…Final words…Seu Jorge and Almaz flew me high…I never stopped dancing, humming and swinging…and that was enough…:) The concert was definitely in harmony with the weather that we were experiencing on Saturday…a summer breeze in autumn…:) I hope to get caught in this breeze again…
The video of “Pai Joao” by Babylon…I’m standing right in front of Dengue :))
