20th Akbank Jazz Festival – Part 2: Ilhan Ersahin’s Istanbul Sessions

It is hard to find the right words to tell how I felt last night…a thousand and one nights…well, ours was one of a thousand and one jazz tales…:))
From time to time, I still don’t get how those notes can touch the inner depths of your soul…plucking every nerve of your brain…bending your emotions…twisting your perception of reality…moving you with its rhythm…giving you continuous presents as if every second of your life is your birthday. On Saturday night, I was at Babylon for watching Ilhan Ersahin’s Istanbul Sessions for the 11th time… :) When jazz in question, it’s never boring…

Ilhan Ersahin…one of the most modest musicians I have ever known…away from all kinds of complexes…so respectful…so nice…there on stage…with his checked trousers, a nublu t-shirt and trainers…as if he was a kid, happy to play with his toy saxophone…fantastic notes…dazzling compositions…eyes mostly closed…not living in our world…the fingers moving rapidly but elegantly…every touch of his fingers is touching my heart and soul…sympathetic…making jokes with his accented turkish (he’s getting better, though)…introducing the name of each song…notes going up and down…throwing you from a cliff…and holding you with the soft clouds…landing is secure but temporary… :)

Alp Ersonmez…he has become one of my fave bass players because of his dynamic style…groovy…possible to see him dancing…:))…funky…playing the bass with his soul, not with his fingers…sometimes playing with a stick and making his bass sound something like an indian sitar and an australian didgeridoo…fingers travelling continuously on the bass strings…nice nice riffs…

Turgut Alp Bekoglu…the energetic drummer of the group…dancing with his drums…touching everything around in a moment…the exact timing of touches…standing up from time to time… :) so enthusiastic…so concentrated…so powerful…

Izzet Kizil…the percussion player…the rhythm ninja…very fast finger moves…hard to catch…a little bit rapping…alittle bit latin…mostly oriental flavours…9/8… :) …even Erik was accompanying him with his shoulders… :) and he was accompanying Erik’s notes with his varied percussion notes…

…Erik Truffaz…whenever I see Erik on stage, I just drift with him…his notes are so flowing that I can’t help letting go of myself and falling in love with his music…on stage again…with his trumpet…sometimes kneeling down…walking around…gazing at the other musicians…sometimes even dancing…glancing at the audience…leaving the stage for a cardigan or a jacket when it gets cold…always playing with all his heart and soul and body…improvising continuously…closing his eyes…living the moment…experiencing the depths…glances…blue eyes…from time to time meeting them…drowning in his creation of sea…seeing the depths of him…beautiful…

Surprise surprise…Craig Harris is on stage…the trombone player…Ilhan told us that he was the first musician that Doublemoon signed its first contract…he made a very improvizational trombone solo…and caught us with his groovy style…follow the trombone player…

I lived the dream…it is always worth seeing them on stage again and again…thanks to the kings and princes…the queens and the princesses…the palaces and the feasts….of the jazz world…

…mmmm…:))

PS: I had a chance to talk to Truffaz and he told me that the new album with his Quartet will be released in November…and this was the dessert part of the concert… :)

20th Akbank Jazz Festival – Part 1: The Count Basie Orchestra

Jazz festival in September is good for the soul…a bit remixed version of Ferit Odman’s words… :) Last night was the opening night of the 2oth Akbank Jazz Festival and it was a grand one: A big band…The ghost band…The Count Basie Orchestra directed by Denis Mackrel featuring Carmen Bradford…I have never been to a big band concert before, I only watched on TV.Therefore I was very excited to see them live on stage…

Denis Mackrel…He is the ex-drummer of this orchestra. When they found a better drummer, he became the director (his own words) :) He is a young man, in his late forties but what you see on stage is a respectful young man. Before going to the concert, I did my research on the net about him and learned that he was a highly respected composer as well. He gave information about each song they were going to play and paid his respect to other composers, which was a nice act. In my opinion, the arrangements were very nice…each note was considered in detail…One o’clock jump…

The Orchestra…It consists of 12 brass instruments, a drummer, an electro guitar and a pianist. They are so much in harmony that they make you think that they live altogether. Everybody had his own solo and they were so beautiful…

Carmen Bradford…a nice lady who has a powerful voice…Her voice surrounds you and hugs you…Easy Living was the most beautiful one…

The music….While listening, the old American movies with Sinatra, Astaire, Kelly etc were passing through my eyes…Swing…so typical…so real…The time hung in air at the concert…Most of the time I closed my eyes and went with the flow…

Long time no see…

I know it’s been quite a long time since I last wrote a blog post.Well, as I mentioned before, I write when the inspiration comes…I think my inspiration angels are on my shoulder at the moment :) What have I done so far? Nothing…

- I was at our summer house in Saros which is one of the cleanest seas in Turkey…untouched, for the time being…I love spending my holidays at the seaside reading, listening to music…a very relaxing atmosphere…”It’s a place suitable for retired people” some say…I agree with that. There is not much entertainment around, but I don’t want noise…sound of the sea and the wind is enough for summer…watching the windsurfers and sometimes kiteboarders…they are my motivation to learn windsurf…Next summer I’m hoping to be an average surfer, kind of pre-intermediate in ELT language :) …

- Now, I got back to the city, İstanbul…kind of diving into chaos…but I missed that, too…There are lots of things to do in town…Let’s see what we have:

* 20th Akbank Jazz Festival…I’m very happy with it. I’d like to hear new people, taste new sounds…(I’ll post my concert list here when I get my tickets.)

* During the jazz festival, there will be also design days…I’d like to design a t-shirt for the jazz festival…heeey, I can do that!!! :) And another activitiy is designing a record cover, which, I think, is very cool…

* And the school is about to start in 2 weeks…And my master begins, too…so you’ll be seeing many posts on language teaching, as well…(I hope!)…

* I became a member of Blip.fm…It’s nice to be called a DJ…Hey, Missy DJ…You can listen to my fave songs at blip.fm/waxpoeticg…

* Another plan of mine is preparing a podcast on music…but it’s just a plan since I’ll be very busy this year…Maybe if I say it, I can do it…motivation… :)

…thanks for reading…

See you soon…keep on smiling…:)
